Vaping Terminology

I’m new to vaping as well so I understand there can be confusion with some of the terms you hear veteran vapers throwing around. With that in mind I’ve compiled the following list of common words and their definitions.

Let me know with a Facebook comment if there’s any more you think would be useful.

Analog – A cigarette or cigar

Atomizer (Atty) – Metal casing that contains the wire coil and cotton.

Cartomizer – The combination of the atomiser and cartridge. It contains the heating element and e-liquid reservoir.

Coil – This little guy can be found inside the atomiser. The wire coil heats and reacts with the e-liquid to produce vapour. They come with different Ohm ratings which denote the amount of vapour they will produce. Generally needs changing every 3 – 4 weeks. A burnt taste will indicate when it needs changing.

Mechanical Mod – A vaporising device that generally doesn’t have wiring or electronics. Basically a metal tube to hold the e-cig battery that has a mechanical switch and a connector.

Mod – Abbreviation for modification. Any vaporising device that isn’t an e-cigarette.

Ohm (Ω) – Unit of electrical resistance. Generally the lower the number the more flavour and vapour that is produced.

Pass-through – A method of powering a vaporising device where it’s connected directly to a power source other than the battery. It enables the device to be used while charging.

Propylene Glycol (PG) – Used in e-liquid as a carrier of nicotine and flavourings. Can be found in many household items (toothpaste, soaps and medicines etc).

Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer (RDA) – A deck with positive and negative posts to build your own coils. One of the most flavoursome ways to vape as you can tailor your coils to suit you depending on number of wraps, type of metal etc. The e-liquid is dripped straight onto the posts, cotton and coils.

Sub-Ohm Vaping – Vaping with a coil that has a resistance level of less than 1.0 Ohm. Generally you trade vapour and flavour for battery life and liquid usage.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) – Used in e-liquid to produce vapour. VG is extracted from palm or coconut oils and found in sweeteners and skin care products. Vapour Evolution have a 100% VG range which you can find here.

Volt (V) – Unit of electrical potential or motive force. Generally the higher the number the more flavour and vapour that is produced.

Watt (W) – Unit of electrical energy or power. Adjusts the amount of heat produced. Increasing the wattage means fine tuning the voltage and resistance levels.

Merry Vapemas!
